Name Ideas

For my chosen name for my magazine I wanted to use a name that was catchy and short but also rememberable so I came up with different names which I thought would fit in with my genre of magazine. I wanted to use a short, individual name for my magazine so people will remember the magazine name and it will be a word that is used in everyday life. I tried to keep the name short and up to two syllables so its easy to say the name of the magazine. The first name i came up with was HEARTBREAK because i thought it would be quite catchy and also has a nice sound to it, but I thought it doesn't sound too much like a music magazine and sounds more like a teen magazine so I came up with the name ICE which i thought is a very simplistic name and very catchy and easy to remember, but i thought maybe it would look a little odd with just three letters and I wanted something bigger that would stand out more. Lastly I came up with the names GRIND and REPLAY. REPLAY really relates to the music and how you would want to carry on replaying your actions and carry on buying the magazine. GRIND is a very catchy name that really fits in with my genre of music and has one syllable which I think has a really good effect as it sounds catchy and written down on a magazine would be really eye catching. REPLAY relates to music which I thought would work well with the magazine because it relates to music. Grind is a catchy word that I think would grab peoples attention and therefore make people want to read the magazine and also it is related to music as we dance to the music and it also relates to R&B very well .

Style

I like the simple use of colours as they make you focus more on the image and also I like the pose the model is holding and also the use of the plain background makes the magazine more easy to read.

I love the use of the colours on this magazine because its abstract and grabs your attention which I want my cover to do so I will make it abstract. I think the magazine uses a bit too many colours so I will only use about 3 colours as it will make it more simple and effective and make it look less messy.

Poses

I love the use of the black and white imagery, but on the front page I think it will look better with colour rather than black and white, so I will think about using black and white on my contents page or double page spead as I think it will engage the audience because it will make all the writing stand out against the black and white. The poses used are really good because they look really proffesional and the use of lighting is really good and eyecatching because the light shines on the model so the models stand out which works really well. The shadow on the Cheryll Cole picture works well and you can tell that the light is on the left hand side shining on her as the shadow is on the right hand side. I really like the Rihanna pose and I love how the lighting is directly above her and the shaddow is underneath her because it makes you focus more on the model and the clothing she is wearing and works really well, so I will be thinking about using my lighting above the model rather than the using in front of the model.

For my contents page I have decided to produce a page with little writing on it and a big picture on the left hand side which will make the magazine more visual. The use of simplicity with the bland colours and little brightness is something I will think about using for my contents page. I really like the first conents page because of the unusual image and the use of colours, I also like the 3rd contents page because of the focus point of the heart. I really like the 2nd contents page because of the pose that Cheryl is using but I think it is a little overcrowded.

Double page spreads

From looking and comparing these double page spreads, I can tell that most double page spreads consist of writing on one side and an image on the other, so from this I can prodict that I will be using a large picture on one side of my double page spread and writing on the other side. Some of the magazines also have little images on the sides aswell which I think gives it a good visual effect. The double page spreads all seem to use black writing which I think is effective with the use of the subtle amount of colours because it makes the colours stand out much more. The titles on the pages are very big and stand out which makes it eyecatching. I think the Lily Allen title is extremely eye catching and would like to do a title like this for my double page spread.

Magazine Genres

Rock

The use of colours on this magazine are quite dark and gloomy colours which promotes the rock theme to the magazine. The use of photography and clothimg of the model is very stereotypical of the rock genre where there wearing leather jackets and have tatoos and dark black hair. I think that the rock magazine is more rough looking and also it's messy which I think looks a bit too overcrowded and in your face which I don't think looks too good. I don't like the colour uses because the yellow clashes with the orange so I think that they should have used a better colour that wouldn't clash as much.

 
Indy

The use of colours on the magazine are really good because they are eye-catching colours, however I don't like the effect of having two people on the cover as it makes it look as if too much is going on and a bit in your face. The use of having well known Indy music artists means people will look at the magazine more and it makes it more visual.I think that the magazine is a bit in your face and I don't like the use of the having more than one person on the cover as it looks a bit tacky. I like that the use of blue and red on the cover are used on the clothing of the magazine colours which I think looks effective.

Hip Hop

This Hip Hop magazine is very eye catching as it has a well known hip hop singer on the cover so it catches the audiences attention because they think there might be an article in the magazine containing information about the singer, so want to buy the magazine.  The use of the little amount of colours, black and pink make the magazine stand out and make it look professional and also it targets a girly audience which is good because more girls read magazines than boys. The glimse of pink in the outfit makes the pink stand out even more and also the use of different font styles is eye catching. I think hip hop would be a good magazine to do because it is music I can relate to and music that most people listen to so targets a mass audience.

R&B

This R&B magazine is aimed at the male gender and features Lil Wayne which is a famous rapper. The use of blue, white, yellow and orange works well together because you don't have too much going on in the background which works well so i will use only a little amount of colour on my front page as it looks more professional. I really like the bold title as it is very rememberable which looks good.










Pop

This pop magazine is aimed at females and we can tell by the use of colours, the pink, black and yellow. The use of Katy Perry makes the target audience want to buy the magazine. The light is in front of her making her look more glowing and the shadow is behind her.I love the girly colours used and the simple amount of writing which makes the magazine look more professional and simple which puts more focus on the picture, so the picture needs to be more extravagant as it will be the focus point.

Conclusion
These magazine covers are successful becasue they have an eye catching image in the middle of the cover of the magazine and all of the magazine have a picture of a famouse singer/rapper which draws the customer's attention and makes the customer want to purchase the magazine because of the music artist on the front page. The use of colours and design make the magazines eye catching so customers will want to purchase the magazine, for example the colours on the Complex magazine. The plugs and lures prove succesful because they make you want to know more about what's on the front and find out about the celebrities and gossip and new music and songs. The use of the celebrities on the front page makes you want to know what is going to be said about that celebrity, either being a bad point or good point so you will want to find out more so will buy the magazine. The use of a light background  promotes more of a girly magazine whereas the darker background promotes a male audience which suggests I will be using a light background as i am targeting my magazine at women rather than men.
